The Sapere Scale: 18 Levels to Track Your Progress Accurately
The CEFR offers 6 levels. Sapere offers 18. A scale three times more precise for measuring every step of progress.
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR, from level A1 to C2) remains the global standard, but its six levels are broad: you can study for months without seeing real progress.
The Sapere scale keeps the same benchmarks and breaks them down into 18 tiers, so that every advance — even a small one — is visible, measured, and confirmed.
Why Use the Sapere Scale?
Progress that's always visible and motivating
Moving from Sapere 8 to Sapere 9 happens much faster than moving from B1 to B2. No more feeling stuck: every tier reached is concrete proof of progress and helps keep motivation intact.
A precisely measured level
Sapere's AI analyzes your pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary to place you exactly within the 18 tiers, not just in a broad CEFR range.
Exercises tailored to your exact stage
Content designed for your precise level, not for an entire CEFR level. The right exercise, at the right time, with no wasted time.
Compatible with recognized benchmarks
Each group of 3 Sapere levels corresponds to one CEFR level. You keep a universal benchmark, useful for a resume, an immigration application, or a school enrollment, while benefiting from much more refined tracking day to day.
Understanding the Sapere Scale and Its Equivalents
The Sapere scale is a language proficiency measurement system developed for the Sapere.ai platform, a Quebec-based AI-powered language learning platform. Rather than limiting itself to the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) — A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 — Sapere offers 18 levels, numbered 1 to 18, each associated with precise, observable oral and written competencies.
This mapping preserves the international CEFR benchmarks while offering much more granular tracking: Sapere levels 1 to 3 cover A1, levels 4 to 6 cover A2, levels 7 to 9 cover B1, levels 10 to 12 cover B2, levels 13 to 15 cover C1, and levels 16 to 18 cover C2.
The Sapere scale is also more fine-grained than the Échelle québécoise des niveaux de compétence en français (12 levels, used notably by the MIFI to assess the French proficiency of immigrants), with 18 tiers applicable across several languages.
More Specific Progress
Combined with Sapere's AI, which provides instant feedback, this 18-level scale allows learners to track their progress in English, French, Spanish, and several other languages with unmatched precision.
